Chapter 17

Leland had gone over all the plans to protect the burial grounds with Trent, Jamie, and Nolan. Everything was in place. Then Jamie called for him and a few of his men to come and protect Abby. It had pulled him from where he had planned to be that evening, but he needed to do as Jamie requested. Something was up or Jamie wouldn’t have called.

Earlier he had fed Eddy the information they wanted him to have. There was a contingent of ten with bows and arrows covering the opening to the burial grounds. The troops Trent sent were hidden in the rocks where they could see the top of the ridge and the approaches to the entrance. They were are ready as they were going to be for whatever McGuire’s minions and bosses had planned.

Nothing had happened in the canyon while Leland was guarding Abby. Jamie was right. He had been needed there to keep Abby safe. Wade was taking her to the big house when he left. He left his horse in a grouping of trees, taking his place in the shadows of the rocks where he could see the entrance the path the raiders were most likely to take to the canyon. He settled in to wait.

The sound of motorized vehicles moving down the canyon reached the defenders as the lay in wait. The invaders weren’t hiding their arrival, believing the troops had been pulled and the burial ground was unguarded. Eddy had done as expected, giving them the false information. Laughter reached Leland as they closed the distance to the waiting men.

Leland was proud of his group as they waited until the men turned off the engines and moved away from the multiple ATVs with trailers they were using as transportation. The moon was low in the sky, throwing a silvery light over the landscape while leaving dark shadows where it couldn’t reach. One of the shadows made a slight movement, unnoticed by the approaching men.

An owl hooted. Immediately afterward several arrows found their marks before the men could react. Within seconds, they were firing blindly into the shadows as more arrows flew into their ranks. The men on top of the walls fired, dropping three of the men. It only took seconds for the men to realize they were outnumbered and had no where to hide. Five men were on the ground when they dropped their guns and raised their hands. One man who hadn’t done so was quickly dispatched with an arrow when he aimed at the officer who was approaching the group.

In the silence, Leland heard distant gunfire. A spike of fear shot through him. The sounds had come from the direction of the ranch. Before he could speak, there was silence. Whatever had gone on was over, be it good or bad.

The troops waiting at the side of the canyon rounded up the men and arranged to take them to the local jail. Leland ensured there was coverage for the rest of the night before heading to the ranch by horse.
